Amsterdam’s Serious Seeds are a household name among cannabis connoisseurs. The company, as we know it today, was founded in 1995 by biologist and breeder, Simon. But how did this legendary, Dutch seed company come about and what makes Serious Seeds so special among its peers?

Simon had studied biology at university in Amsterdam, yet despite his surroundings, he was always a non-smoker. Later Interviews with Simon reveal that this was more to do with his dislike of tobacco than an aversion to cannabis.

As Simon embarked on an expedition through Africa in the 1980’s, his biology background led him to become aware of the beneficial and therapeutic effects of pure cannabis; that is, cannabis which has NOT been mixed with tobacco (as was the convention in The Netherlands at the time). Fascinated and intrigued by the different landrace strains he encountered in Africa, Simon began collecting and cataloguing cannabis seeds for his private collection.
More out of curiosity than commercial endeavor, Simon began to germinate his African seeds when he returned to Amsterdam. From there, the natural progression was to start experimenting with cross breeding and selection. Before long other Amsterdam-based growers were sharing genetics with Simon. The African strains from his travels were spliced, crossed, back-crossed and selected until Simon was in possession of some very “serious” genetics indeed.

Around this time Simon eschewed conventional biology (and his High School teaching job) and began working with his friend (and fellow Amsterdam legend) Alan Dronkers at Sensi Seeds. From there, he founded his own seedbank – Cerebral Seeds - alongside two American enthusiasts who had also made Amsterdam their home.
In the November of that year – 1994 – Simon’s creations AK-47 and Chronic both won awards at the High Times Cannabis Cup at the first time of asking. This success gave Simon the shot in the arm he needed to stop collaborating with other breeders and launch his own “Serious” seed company!

Just like that, Serious Seeds was born. Simon set the company up with a few clearly defined goals: to create interesting new strains that were different to the usual run-of-the-mill varieties out there. To concentrate on stability and uniformity in their seeds, so that breeders and growers could rely on Serious Seeds for the finest genetics. To focus on medicinal and therapeutic value of their cannabis and to improve potency through selection.
Unlike a lot of seed companies, Serious Seeds are not interested in becoming the biggest in the world. They’re not even that interested in winning cups. They’re not interested in constantly releasing new strains to the market unless they offer something new or improve on the original.

For many years, Serious Seeds produced just 11 different strains – every one of which has won industry awards. This desire to stay small and focus on the quality set the company apart from its peers. Even today, some 24 years after starting out, Serious have only added a handful of new strains to their catalogue. Each included on it’s own merits and because it offers something that other strains do not – whether that be the CBD-enriched version of Warlock or the auto-flowering version of White Russian.

In those 24 years since launch, Serious Seeds have won plaudits, awards, friends and admirers both inside and outside the industry.
