Archive Seedbank – Legendary Cannabis From The Pacific North-West
Archive Seedbank are an elite cannabis seeds company, coming out of the Pacific North West of the United States. The company was officially founded in 2011 by the mysterious breeder known simply as The Docta. Here’s a little background about The Docta, his team, and the rich culture of cannabis in the North-Western USA:
The Pacific North-West is big – like, really big. Although geographical definitions of the area vary, is it universally agreed that this vast wedge of the US encompasses at least Washington state and the state of Oregon. To give a little perspective, Oregon alone is larger in area than the entire United Kingdom. Framed by the Rocky mountains to the East and the Pacific ocean to the West, this is a part of the US with a long history of cannabis culture that extends southwards into neighbouring Northern California and the infamous Emerald Triangle.
Of course, Washington and Oregon were also two of the States fortunate enough to be among the first to open up to cannabis legalisation back in 2015. Naturally, this new found freedom saw an explosion of new cannabis-related businesses, farms and of course, customers.
Many of those fledgling companies have since fallen by the wayside as the market forces of increasingly discerning customers ensured survival of the only the fittest. Predictably, Archive Seedbank positively flourished. Their award-winning seeds are widely available locally and in legal states across the US. Their catalogue of cannabis strains has ballooned from an initial 60 to over 90 varieties now listed. To put that seemingly innocuous statistic in perspective, legendary Dutch company Serious Seeds started out 17 years earlier than Archive with less than ten strains, and 26 years later, they now have a whopping 14 (excluding autos).
Now, at this point a few purists might be rolling their eyes and thinking: “Well anyone could release 90 strains in ten years!” “They’ll all be trash! Companies like Serious Seeds do things properly!”
And they’d be right. But also very wrong.
Companies like Serious Seeds and Sensi Seeds definitely do things properly. That’s why they’ve stood the test of longevity and seen all their competition come and go with the passage of time. Their proud little shops still remain in the heart of Amsterdam and their seeds are as popular today as they were in the early 90’s. Quality trumps quantity – no doubt.
But Archive Seedbank haven’t released 90 seeds for nothing. The Docta is a supremely talented breeder who understands his target market – because he’s a part of it. He’s a straight-up flavour chaser and he makes no apologies for that whatsoever.
There is a very interesting blog on Archive Seedbank’s own website which quotes an interview with The Docta where he reveals details about his youth, his early experiments with growing and the circumstances that led him into breeding and launching his own company. The Docta says:
“ I kind of developed a taste for really amazing stuff at an early age. At some point in high school I decided I would rather grow than go to engineering school.”
This discerning nature, The Docta explains, came from his first smoking experiences out west being shared with a veritable Who’s Who? of the US glass-blowing scene (another art form that the Pacific NW seems to excel at, but that’s for another blog!) – with great glass came great cannabis, and The Docta was in love. He began collecting seeds and cuts of his favourite strains: Seattle Purps, The DogShit and Face Off OG, breeding and selecting the best phenotypes to rear as mothers to create seeds. As The Docta honed his skills and discovered his rare abilities, his reputation duly soared. Good friends and admiring out-of-state contacts began to share their favourite cuts. Bomb Threat and Purple Urkle are famous heritage strains explicitly associated with Northern California that his good buddy NspectaGT passed to him in deference to their shared goal of preserving old and rare cannabis genetics – or “archiving” them if you will. To quote The Docta again:
“I am really all about the aroma of cannabis and trying to preserve the flavours. I love cannabis but it’s not all about getting high for me. For the past twelve years I have been going through hell and high water trying to find and preserve the most rare and aromatic strains around.”
The birth of Archive Seedbank in 2011 was a natural progression. The Docta realised that his now 60-strong strain library was enough to launch a successful cannabis seed company and he went for it, launching officially and trusting his talents.
2 years later, The Docta was presumably busy extending the size of his “surgery” to include a trophy room for his 2013 LA High Times Cannabis Cup for Grimace OG, his 2013 Amsterdam High Times Cannabis Cup 1st for Lemon Amnesia and a host of awards for associated extracts.
2014 continued in much the same way with Hell Raiser OG clinching the gold at the 2014 San Francisco High Times Cannabis Cup.
Awards and recognition have come thick and fast for Archive Seedbank ever since. They’re an established ‘big hitter’ of US West coast cannabis genetics and their name is synonymous with quality, reliability and authentic, heritage cannabis.
Although mind-melting potency was never The Docta’s primary goal, some Archive strains are super potent without compromising on taste and aroma. A few strains that were lab-tested for THC content in Seattle were into the mid 20% range, with later strains like Moonbow cross Light Speed taking things much further. Beware – as pretty as they look, and as beautiful as they smell, Archive strains are not for the novices.
